Tuesday, February 5th~Volcano Day

Today we blew our tops!!!

We started our day reading this book

I'm a huge fan of The Magic School Bus series.  This wonderful book helped the children to explore why volcanoes explode and how they create new land forms.

After thinking about volcanoes in the abstract it was time to get a little more concrete.

I've always wanted to let the kids make paper-mache volcanoes but with eighteen or more students it has been a bit too daunting for me, but now with five, very doable.  So, we jumped in, got messy, and had a lot of hands on learning fun.

The children spent the better part of an hour covering their water bottles with the paper-mache.

Once all the bottles were covered we sat our volcanoes to one side to dry then turned our attentions to making our class volcano blow its top.  Giggles, exclamations of delight, squeals, and laughter filled the room as we took turns blowing our tops over, and over, and over.  I had to end the fun with a promise to revisit our volcano after nap.  They never tired.

Mix, red food-colored water, with baking soda, pour in vinegar, then Va va va BOOM~Blow your top!

After talking the children into setting our volcano to the side, it was time to make the connection with all this fun and our letter of the week, Vv, so...

The children got a big bang, please forgive the pun, out of chanting, "Va va va BOOM!" while creating their V volcanoes.

After a morning of learning fun it was time for lunch.  I had a little surprise planned for the kidos.

Dinos (Chicken nuggets), Volcanoes (strawberries standing on ends, quarter cut, filled with whipped cream),
trees (broccoli)  and milk, of course.

They had such a good time with their lunch today.  They never stopped chattering.

After nap we enjoyed a snack of

We practiced writing our names and did this Vv worksheet.

Time to paint our volcanoes.

I found little volcano kits at Target, so we sat our volcanoes to the side to dry and pulled out our volcano kits.
The kids couldn't get enough of this blasting hot fun.

So much explosive Vv fun.

See you guys tomorrow,
Ms. P
