This book is wonderful for introducing a unit of study about insects.
There are many different insects in the book, some are large, some small, some have wings, others don't. The insects are an eclectic mix but they all share these same attributes; three body parts, six legs, two antenna. The children never tired of reading and rereading this book and even after the surprise ending ceased to be a surprised, it never ceased to delight.
As the days progressed, the children began to join in with the chant, 'He rubbed his legs together, but nothing happen, not a sound!'
Thanks, Eric Carle for giving teachers and children such wonderfully entertaining, educational books!
After reading this book all month it was time to get a little buggy and create our own bug books.
These wonderful, large insect stamps from Oriental Trading Company helped us do just that.
Picasso Preschoolers go buggy!
We got our play-dough--green for our insect unit of study and Ms. P added cootie parts and we created play-dough insects by rolling three body parts, adding six legs and two antenna.
Ms. P gave us pipe-cleaners, in place of out cootie parts, and let us create our own insect creature to take home.
Such fun hands-on learning!
Now it was time to get really buggy
Each child was given four paper plates to paint. After their paper plates dried the kids added six construction paper legs, Ms. P stapled them in pairs, then stapled them to construction paper strips
Add construction paper antenna hats and just like that
WE'VE GONE BUGGY!!!
Have a buggy good day, everyone.
Ms. P
